Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 4,   Pages 510-517 doi: 10.1007/s11709-011-0129-3

Abstract: By examining the two neighboring Haihe Bridges with semi- and full-closed bridge decks, the aerodynamicinterference between the two decks on the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) and the corresponding aerodynamicmitigation measures are investigated via a series of wind tunnel tests with a spring-suspended sectionalstructural and aerodynamic configurations are adopted for the two bridges.Furthermore, an effective combined measure of adding wind barriers and sharpening the wind fairing noses

Abstract: been adopted in the design and construction of long-span bridges as an effective flutter controlling measureFive basic girder cross-sections representing five typical aerodynamic configurations were selected andmethod (2 dimension-3 degrees of freedom method, 2d-3DOF method) were carried out to investigate the aerodynamicThe results show that central-slotting can not always improve the aerodynamic stability of bridge structureThe control effect of central-slotting depends on the aerodynamic configuration of the original girder

Robust ensemble of metamodels based on the hybrid error measure

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2021, Volume 16, Issue 3,   Pages 623-634 doi: 10.1007/s11465-021-0641-7

Abstract: Metamodels have been widely used as an alternative for expensive physical experiments or complex, time-consuming computational simulations to provide a fast but accurate analysis. However, challenge remains in the prior determination of the most suitable metamodel for a particular case because of the lack of information about the actual behavior of a system. In addition, existing studies on metamodels have largely restricted on solving deterministic problems (e.g., data from finite element models), whereas some real-life engineering problems (e.g., data from physical experiment) are stochastic problems with noisy data. In this work, a robust ensemble of metamodels (EMs) is proposed by combining three regression stand-alone metamodels in a weighted sum form. The weight factor is adaptively determined according to the hybrid error metric, which combines global and local error measures to improve the accuracy of the EMs. Furthermore, three typical individual metamodels that can filter noise are selected to construct the EMs to extend their application in practical engineering problems. Three well-known benchmark problems with different levels of noise and three engineering problems are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed EMs. Results show that the proposed EMs have higher accuracy and robustness than the individual metamodels and other typical EMs in major cases.

Venkatesh KODUR, M. Z. NASER

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 1,   Pages 46-60 doi: 10.1007/s11709-020-0676-6

Abstract: This paper reviews the fire problem in critical transportation infrastructures such as bridges and tunnels. The magnitude of the fire problem is illustrated, and the recent increase in fire problems in bridges and tunnels is highlighted. Recent research undertaken to address fire problems in transportation structures is reviewed, as well as critical factors governing the performance of those structures. Furthermore, key strategies recommended for mitigating fire hazards in bridges and tunnels are presented, and their applicability to practical situations is demonstrated through a practical case study. Furthermore, research needs and emerging trends for enhancing the “state-of-the-art” in this area are discussed.
